हातिम की कहानी मध्य-पूर्व के अरबी देश यमन की है। कहानी यमन के शहजादे हातिम के जन्म से शुरू होती है। भविष्यवाणी होती है कि हातिम अच्छाई का फरिश्ता है और वो दुनिया से बुराई का नाश करेगा। इसी समय जफर साम्राज्य के सुल्तान के घर भी बेटा पैदा होता है जो बुराई के लिए पृथ्वी पर जन्मा है। जब सुल्तान को इस बात का पता चलता है तो वो इस बच्चे को मारने का निर्णय करता है। वो अपने बच्चे को मारने के लिए अपने एक नौकर नज़ुमी को कह देता है।
नजुमी बच्चे को नही मारता बल्कि उसे अकेले में जाकर अपने पास रख लेता है और एक खरगोश को मारकर उसके खून से ये दिखा देता है कि उसने बच्चे को मार दिया। नजुमी बच्चे को दज्जाल नाम देता है और उसके काली शक्तिओं में माहिर कर देता है।
जब दज्जाल बड़ा होता है तो वो अपने माता-पिता को हटाकर उनका राज्य हथिया लेता है। उसका उस्ताद नजुमी उसे बताता है कि अगर वो दुर्गापुर की राजकुमारी सुनैना से विवाह कर ले तो उसका पुरी दुनिया पर राज करने का सपना पूरा हो सकता है। दज्जाल सुनैना का हाथ मांगने दुर्गापुर जाता है, पर वो मना कर देती है क्योंकि वो जनकपुर के राजकुमार विशाल से प्यार करती है। सुनैना का भाई दज्जाल पर वार करता है लेकिन दज्जाल उसे पत्थर की मूर्ति बना देता है। दज्जाल सुनैना को कहता है कि अगर वो सात महीने में उसके पास नहीं आई तो उसका भाई सदा के लिए मूर्ति ही रहेगा।
उधर यमन में हातिम और परिस्तान की रानी जास्मिन की शादी की तैयार चल रही होती है। तभी वहां पर राजकुमार विशाल आ जाता है और हातिम से दज्जाल के विरूद्ध लड़ने के लिए बोलता है। तभी परीस्तान का राजा एक भविष्यवाणी के बारे में बात करता है कि हातिम को पहले सात सवालों के जवाब पूरे करने होंगे तभी वो दज्जाल को हरा सकता है। हातिम सभी सवाल पूरे कर देता है और अंत एक युद्ध होता है जिसमें हातिम जीत जाता है और कहानी खत्म हो जाती है।
